Broken Ring Circuit Faults Found During EICR

How two socket ring final circuits with broken continuity were traced, repaired and electrically retested after an Electrical Installation Condition Report.

What the EICR identified

Walker Electrical had previously carried out an Electrical Installation Condition Report at the property. Testing identified that two socket ring final circuits did not have satisfactory continuity around the ring.

The circuits could not be treated as sound ring final circuits simply because the connected sockets appeared to have power. The finding required investigation so the location and nature of each break could be understood.

What a broken ring final circuit means

A ring final circuit is wired so that the line, neutral and circuit protective conductors form continuous paths from the consumer unit, around the connected points and back to the consumer unit. Testing checks that those conductors have the expected continuity.

If part of that path is broken, some or all sockets may still appear to work because they remain supplied from one direction. That apparent operation does not demonstrate that the circuit is intact or that current will be shared around the ring as intended.

How the breaks were traced

WES returned to carry out the agreed remedial investigation. Structured electrical fault finding was used to divide and test the affected circuits, narrowing down the possible locations instead of opening points without a plan.

The affected points and connections were located. Once the circuit breaks had been identified, the necessary repairs were made to restore continuity.

Why investigation and repair were appropriate

An EICR records the condition found during inspection and testing; it does not by itself repair the defect. Targeted investigation was the appropriate next step because it established where the continuity had been lost and allowed the repair to address the actual cause.

This avoided relying on the misleading fact that sockets could still be energised and ensured the remedial decision was based on circuit measurements.

Repair and verification

  • The affected points and connections were located.
  • The breaks in both socket ring final circuits were repaired.
  • The repaired circuits were electrically retested.
  • Testing confirmed satisfactory circuit continuity and operation after the remedial work.
