Strong Pilates Brighton Commercial Electrical Fit-Out
A commercial studio fit-out combining feature lighting, changing-room and wellness-area power, high-load equipment circuits, distribution-board alterations and structured data cabling.
The fit-out brief
Walker Electrical was appointed for the electrical installation within the refurbishment of the Strong Pilates premises on London Road in Brighton. The agreed scope was developed from the current layout drawings, site discussions and subsequent design amendments.
The installation was planned around the existing building infrastructure. Suitable cable tray, containment and Click plug-and-play lighting connections were to be retained and reused wherever practical, while redundant wiring and around 30–40 suspended fluorescent fittings were to be removed safely.
Feature lighting for the studio and circulation spaces
The main Pilates studio design included three black track-lighting systems, each approximately 15 metres long and fitted with around 10 adjustable black LED spotlights. Kinetic wireless switches and receivers were specified so the lighting could be controlled without relying on conventional switch wiring at every control point.
The wider lighting scope included concealed LED strip lighting within the recessed mirror details, approximately 25 metres of black corridor track lighting, occupancy-controlled lighting to the changing rooms and wellness areas, and additional self-contained emergency lighting.
Power for changing, wellness and service areas
The fit-out required coordinated power for the male and female changing rooms, Disabled WC, massage room, plunge-pool and sauna area, and laundry and maintenance room. The accepted quotation included two electric-shower circuits, instantaneous under-basin water-heater supplies, a dedicated sauna supply, laundry equipment supplies and the electrical connection for a central commercial extract system.
These new loads required alterations to the existing Schneider Acti9 three-phase distribution board. Contactor control and local switches were included for the shower and water-heater circuits so the specialist equipment could be supplied and controlled as designed.
Adapting the design during delivery
A later accepted variation recorded further electrical, lighting and media work. It covered alterations to both shower supplies, low-voltage LED lighting to changing-room and massage-room kickboards, a power supply for the water-fountain light, two additional television socket positions and local supplies for two Smell Sense units.
The same agreed change also covered the Cat6 cabling and completion of a Raspberry Pi HDMI television distribution system. The project record identifies approximately 120 metres of Cat6 cable, with the installed cables to be terminated, identified and tested before the television outputs were commissioned.
Testing, commissioning and handover
The agreed scope requires the new electrical work to be inspected, tested and commissioned, with an Electrical Installation Certificate, Schedule of Test Results, updated circuit schedules and emergency-lighting test records provided where applicable.
Individual additions in the accepted variation also include inspection, testing or commissioning at the point each item is completed. At publication, the job remains active in the WES project record, so this case study does not claim that the final project handover has already taken place.
Installation scope and verification
- A coordinated lighting design covering the main studio, mirrors, corridors, changing spaces and wellness areas.
- Dedicated circuits and controls for showers, water heaters, sauna, laundry equipment and commercial extract ventilation.
- Distribution-board alterations and reuse of suitable existing containment to integrate the new installation with the building.
- Agreed additions documented through a formal variation, including feature LED lighting, extra power points and the data and television distribution system.
- Inspection, testing, commissioning and project certification specified for the completed work and final handover.
